After finishing this book I am left feeling like it was a great story with strong and relatable characters. There were times I was concerned on where the story was going based on discussions of women as property and man's obligation to beat his wife. While this might be historically accurate it was a tough pill to swallow but ended up being less of an issue than it may have felt to be at times. The characters dialogue was also challenging to acquaint myself with, but helped hold the setting as being in the medieval times. Overall it was a very cute story with memorable and funny scenes and I couldn't put it down (probably because I kept thinking "he better not hit her!")Tags : Defy Not the Heart [Johanna Lindsey] on Amazon.com. *FREE* shipping on qualifying offers. Defy Not the Heart Johanna Lindsey 9780380752997 Books Reviews
The first book I read by Johanna Lindsey was HEARTS AFLAME, the 2nd in the Haargard Medieval Viking trilogy and it was a keeper. That made me want to read more, so I went to the rest of the trilogy (FIRES OF WINTER and SURRENDER MY LOVE). They were good but not as good. The same is true of DEFY NOT THE HEART but to a lesser degree. It is not her writing--that is good good dialog, good character development and the setting true to the historical period. Rather, it is the story itself. This one bored me. I nearly put it down at page 100. And I think those who have given it 5 stars just haven't read good romance, and I'm including good Johanna Lindsey romance.
This is the tale of a young noblewoman, Reina, who is described as "tiny" and neither beautiful nor ugly (I think the word the author avoided is plain), which was very disappointing since the hero is 6'6"). I'm thinking she's 4'11" and a size 0 and it just didn't work for me visually. Anyway, her father's death leaves her in charge of Clydon, a very large estate with many lands, and in need of a husband to protect her and it. She has a few candidates in mind and sends them letters asking them to come, but before they do, she is abducted by the golden giant Ranulf, a bastard knight who is into cats (another negative for me) and is now serving as a mercenary. He's been hired by an old lord who wants Reina for his wife in order to get Clydon. But Reina bargains with Ranulf to marry her, luring him with the promise of Clydon. That's it in a nutshell.
The rest of the story is local politics and keep life. I found Reina and Ranulf's relationship and interactions unrealistic. Their chemistry just never "caught." She was sometimes too meek and other times too sassy and he was not even attracted to her initially. His supposed lust for her seemed contrived. Perhaps if he'd been attracted to her from the beginning I might have felt differently. But his total ignorance of how to pleasure a woman was not believable with his having had a passionate love affair early in his life and much experience with women (albeit professionals) since then. Lindsey can do better.
I first read this book in paperback and I'm absolutely happy that I found it on .
Reina and Ranulf are one of my favourite book couples. The banter put between is absolutely entertaining, sweet and funny.
This story is light and romantic and Ms. Lindsey brings the characters to life in her writing.
I would recommend this book to anyone looking for a story with light and laughter.
I've said it before and I will say it again, this is my all time favorite author. If Johanna writes, even if some say is so-so it's better than others they say are the best. She knows how to grab you at the first page and take sliding through the entire book on a whirlwind of sensual desire, lust and all consuming love.
This one is no exception. The character of Reina is a strong, wonderful, sweet, and sincere woman who she pairs with Ranulf, a man among men. I at first thought she was going to let me down with him taking her as bride to someone else. I should have known Johanna never disappoints. This is a tale of endurance, strength, learning to trust and to love unconditionally. It takes place in the Medieval or Feudal times and is woven around battles and kings, and knights of old.
I know if you've read Ms. Lindsey's stories you will love this one, too. If not, then now is the time to get on board and sit back and enjoy the sensual ride of your life, as no one else can deliver it. Enjoy!!!!!!
Read this book for the first time many years ago. One thing I found about this story is from the start great sexual chemistry between the main characters. He can't control it, she gets annoyed with the way he conducts it (quick and rough). She wants to feel what he does. Does he get it together? While all the answers are coming together. There are other problems coming up. People from the past showing up, a neighborhood bully. Great story with a great romance mixed with suspense. Great read
