Excerpt from The Wicked Marquis
The judge's decision was, without doubt, calami tous, he confessed gloomily.
The Marquis turned in at the Savoy courtyard with the air of an habitué.
I am in need of a brief rest and some refreshment, he said. You will accompany me, if you please, Mr. Wadham.
The lawyer acquiesced and felt somehow that he had become the tail end of a procession, the Marquis's entrance and progress through the grillroom towards the smoking-room bar was marked by much deference on the part of porters, cloak-room attendants and waiters, a deference acknowledged in the barest possible fashion, yet in a manner which his satellite decided to make a study of. They reached a retired corner of the smoking room, where the Marquis subsided into the only vacant easy chair, ordered for himself a glass of dry sherry, and left his companion to select his own refreshment and pay for both.

This is an enjoyable read by Oppenheim, although dated. The characters that matter are fleshed out nicely, and the way the revenge works out is done masterfully. The Marquis of the title isn't so much wicked as he is mired in a previous era - I couldn't help sympathizing with the characters that had to deal with him. Worth the read if you're into historical fiction.Product details

The Wicked Marquis Classic Reprint E Phillips Oppenheim 9781334119927 Books Reviews
This book is dated and not for everyone. It painted a picture of life long past. I enjoyed the book. The ending was satisfying.
Excellent mystery with really interesting characters and situation. A classic!
This exquisite novel takes one to a place where the old and the new clashed. One sees the damage of society where class mattered more than meritocracy
I like way Oppenheim writes. He makes the characters interesting and classy. The plot is not predictable or boring.
Despite how long ago it was written, it reads like a current novel. I enjoyed it very much & want to read other books by the author.
I found this novel very interesting. It made me wonder what type of revenge the old man was plotting. Also if the shares would increase in value.
Published in 1914, The Wicked Marquis has a lot to say about the societal pressures and opportunities of its day. The intertwining of characters can take a little effort to keep track of, but that's what Search is for. Enjoyable read that leaves you with lots to contemplate if you so choose.
