The Mouse Writer Ethan Johnson Jon Cannell Books
This short children's book (for about a 3rd grade reading level), is a fast read set during Christmas, though it isn't a Christmas tale, per se. The text has only one reference to Christmas, though the illustrations show a Christmas tree, and stockings hanging by the fire.Huxley, a little mouse who writes stories, loses his notebook. The unpleasant children in the family, a young brother and sister who squabble incessantly, fight over the tiny notebook of stories, and though Huxley writes notes pleading for its return, the kids don't know who is sending them. Soon there's a confrontation, a chase scene involving the family cat, and a happy ending.
The book would have been stronger with the addition of one of Huxley's stories from his notebook, described as "fantastic stories" with "all kinds of fun adventures." One thinks a Huxley story would be perhaps more substantial than this quickly cobbled tale, which was written to be a seasonal counter item at Starbucks Coffee. But Huxley is an appealing protagonist with admirable manners and lovely handwriting, and the illustrations are simple and charming.
