“That pay is rightfully ours,” insisted the miner. “Punishing me won’t change that.”
“You do realise I have a seat on the King’s council? I could have you hanged. Consider this a mercy.”
The man stepped back, nodding to the whip-bearer.
“Strike.”

Amid civil unrest and tenuous treaties with their former enemies, the Kingdom is shaken by an attack on the King’s life, with suspicions cast on those within his own court. While a group of miners fight for their rights, the capital plays host to a rival ruler offering a marriage alliance, and the Kings' children vie for superiority in a tournament. It soon becomes clear that the danger stretches not only to the royal family, but the stability of the entire Kingdom.

This came up for me under the "fantasy" category. Let me start by saying: no, this is NOT fantasy. Fiction, undoubtedly. Possibly Historical Fiction, albeit with an "alternative history" bend to it. It is set in Medieval Europe but in a fictitious kingdom. But being mislabeled doesnt make it bad, just not what I exected. I wasted a lot of thought trying to guess when the wizards or dragons would show up. But the closest we get is the "hellfire" stuff which is basically Greek fire or napalm.

Anyhow, its alright for what it is. A simple little tale about a guy trying to form a union. The plot itself is a bit mundane. Didn't ever really grab my interest, though it got close a few times. The "noble" characters were unlikeable, so I couldn't bring myself to root for any of them.

Medieval fiction isn't really my thing, so maybe it's better to a more devoted fan. But it was a reasonably complex tale, with some real meat in it. Just didn't grab me, I guess. I can't imagine that anyone would be the ideal fan for this. King Arthur fans would be disappointed by the lack of nobility among the nobles. While there was a "romance" aspect, it was severely underplayed and certainly not satisfying to someone looking for that. There was no attempt at historical accuracy at all, so that's clearly not the appeal. The combat scenes were plentiful, so that's something. But mostly they seemed to me to be too much focused on the wrong aspects. Too vague in some ways and too much grisly detail in others..

...And the second half of the book is full of copy errors. Extra words and missing words. That sort of thing. Annoying.

overall, an uninspiring read that definitely left me NOT wanting more. But also not clamoring for a refund either.
