Outbreak Green Fields #2 eBook Adrienne Lecter

The first book was long and slow for my taste. Not bad, but it just completely wore out the bickering/bantering between the main characters. A few times I wanted to throw my kindle across the room ... I mean - WE GET IT, THEY HAVE CHEMISTRY. I'd imagine most of the readers are adults and most of us have, 'been there done that.'

In addition, the female main character is obsessed about being seen as equal to men. This is an issue I understand and appreciate very much. However, the character's behavior and word choices are f-ing exhausting. She comes across as immature and implies a dramatic lack of self-awareness for a character who is supposed to be a woman of science in her thirties.

The second book maintains a certain level, if not an intense level, of action; and mercifully, it doesn't belabor her incessant need to bicker with the male protagonist in order to constantly prove her worth. She is finally learning the power of keeping her mouth shut rather than being goaded into unproductive, childish exchanges with other characters.

I appreciate that the author is trying to show the growth of the protagonist between books, but a person as supposedly scientifically minded and intelligent as the story claims - learns that in college ... or grad school if she's slow. I seriously started to wonder if the author was actually a man because she applies such a lack of emotional intelligence in her main character. As a successful professional woman working in a male dominated profession myself, I found the author's portrayal of a professional woman ridiculous, condescending, and flat out unbelievable.

I delayed providing a review after the first book because it wouldn't have been good. I decided to give the second book a chance. The main character matures to some degree in the second book. There's a bit more depth and a more interesting story coming together in the second book with the addition of more characters. The female protagonist still comes across as somewhat emotionally immature, but she's improving. At least the second book doesn't include 100 pages of completely inane bickering between the male and female protagonists.

I hope the story starts to pick up and progress faster and with
more action as the series continues. Despite my somewhat critical review, the series is thus far reasonably interesting. I'm hoping the author's skill as a story teller and ability to add and maintain additional characters and subplots improves along with the series.

Three stars for a decent story, which would have been one star if I stopped after the first book. I will update this review or add another as I continue the series and determine if the overall story delivers the adequate interest and action expected of authors in this genre.

Outbreak Green Fields #2 eBook Adrienne Lecter Reviews

Slight disclaimer here I have read through the 4th book in this series and am now going back and reviewing the previous books. I will try not to give any spoilers, but if I do, I apologize up front.

Picking up where the first book left off, this is where we start to see the real zombie action. I have to say that with the foundation laid by the first book this one came on much more powerfully. Again the pacing was fantastic and the story was gripping. I enjoyed feeling for the main character and her trials and tribulations as far as becoming a contributing member of the group she finds herself with. FAR more entertaining than if the story had been told by a Ms 'Rambo' (Imagine this story told by Pia....it wouldn't be anywhere near as good).

As far as the writing, there were typos here and there, but nothing too distracting (a pallet is something you stack freight on, not a palette). Wonderful writing from an author I had never heard of before and money well spent!
I was very happy when book two in the Green Fields series was published so quickly after the first one as I couldn't wait to get on with the story and to find out what had caused the apocalypse. I liked the character development of Bree a great deal; how she is able to justice her place in the group of soldiers as a former labrat and how she is treated just like one of the guys. She faces even some of the funny realilties of the life after the apocalypse that still show how she's a human being and a woman! Those moments and the more courageous, snappy bickering with the guys created some great, funny moments in the book. In addition to the fun there were some action-packed events and the long, long walk ahead to possible safety. Some successes to Bree and some failures as well which show that her character development is not complete yet.

In book 2 we get some questions from book 1 answered, or do we? I don't want to write any spoilers here, but I do believe that Adrienne has not told us the entire truth of the story in this book. There are more revelations to come for sure and I can't to read more. I already have my favourite guys in the story, I can't figure out why Nate is so special or what his backstory is really? And the ultimate question, are they really going to make it, which is still completely open. I bet that book 3 doesn't give me the answer to the ultimate question either, but more adventures and challenges for this great bunch of survivors whose journey I want to follow to the end.
I really like this series. It's well written, suspenseful and fun. The only issue is the main male character, the main character's love interest. He's a complete ass to her basically at all times unless he suddenly decides to screw her. It's difficult to understand why she would so desperately puppy-eyes in love with him when he treats her like trash. You expect at some point for him to become a decent person but he just never really does. The rest of the regular characters are mostly likeable with one or two coming across as kind of flat. The action is good, nice twists and turns.

****Spoiler Alert about one scene*****
One scene is really terrible and seems completely out of place for the entire rest of the book. After the main character (civilian scientist) makes a mistake in a zombie attack, a dozen or so large grown military men take turns punching the defenseless woman half their size in the stomach to the point of puking and sobbing. This apparently proves she is trustworthy (even though the issue only endangered her, not the rest of the team) and now she is part of the team again since they shunned her until she let them beat her up. It just didn't make any sense and didn't seem to fit the other characters in the group at all. Especially when the mistake was something where it seemed like some exasperation would have been more appropriate, not the disgust, fury, and bizarre hazing. I almost stopped reading thinking the book was headed in some odd direction, but it goes back to normal after that.
