Which, for me, is a shame. I liked many of her previous historicals and bought this one on the strength of her name and that past experience alone (I wasn't too atracted to the story line, but thought I'd give it a try). Lesson learned: just because you like one type of book by an author doesn't mean that you'll like a completely different line.I wish her the best, I'm sure many other people will enjoy the new "vampire" slant in her writing, but, from now on, I'll pass. I can take "supernatural parallel reality" books along the line of Harry Potter, but a vampire subculture is just a little much--not to mention unpleasant. Blood-sucking fangs and romance are difficult for me to associate, for some reason.
(Although, for my tastes, it was a zero star book and an experience I don't plan to repeat (there are going to be sequels galore, I'm sure), I gave it aa couple stars because I'm sure that the author worked as hard on this one as she did on her other books--well drawn characters and emotions, defined plot line, etc. I just couldn't (and didn't want to) suspend reality to that extent.)

This was an emotional story about a young woman Prudence, who is dying of cancer and is desperate to find the Holy Grail, when her search gets closer to actually finding the Grail the church sends Chapel, a 600 year old vampire. Chapel is looking for a very different artifact, the Blood Grail and is determined to prevent others from his fate, drinking from then turning into the monster he see's himself to be. An unexpected relationship develops and tests Chapels convictions about life and death. Have plenty of tissue ready, the love between Pru and Chapel will make you cry.
In this first book, Smith introduces us to Chapel one of 6 warriors who has become a vampire, and who dedicates his life to preventing the Blood Grail from falling into the wrong hands. This was an enjoyable read and I am looking forward to reading her next book, "Night of the Huntress" which tells the story of Bishop another one of the warrior vampires.
In the 1300's Chapel and his six friends were sent to raid the Templar's treasure. Hoping to find the Holy Grail what they find instead is the Blood Grail. Unknown to them, taking a sip of the cup the men are instantly vampires. 1899 Prudence and Marcus are digging for the Holy Grail, the church sends two people for support. Chapel being in the service of the church for centuries comes to the dig in case it is the blood grail they find. Pru is sick with some kind of lower intestine cancer, she is vivacious and wants to live so badly thus her search for the grail. Pru has a great family, three sisters and an understanding father. The last thing Chapel thinks he'll find is salvation. Pru and Chapel are instantly attracted to each other. Throughout the story their relationship evolves. Their pull to each other is adorable! I couldn't put the book down. It's very past paced, their story pulls you in. They have the kinda relationship everyone wants. Unconditional love and an interesting story plot. I will definitely read the following books in this series.
Plot Summary Prudence Ryland is searching for a miracle. Her body is riddled with cancer, and she's digging for the Holy Grail in the hope it will give her a miracle cure. When the Catholic church sends two emissaries to monitor her dig, Pru is worried they'll take the cup before she can get a sip, but she's fascinated by one of her visitors. Chapel is a strange man, with golden hair and eyes, and an aversion to sunlight. Not only do they fail to find the grail, but their search attracts the attention of a sinister group who would silence Prudence and her entire family. Meanwhile, Chapel must struggle with his decision to let Pru die from cancer, or change her into a vampire and thereby condemn her soul.
I enjoy reading historical vampire romances since they're such a novelty. Most vampire stories I come across are set in the here and now, so it's a treat to see what benefits and obstacles vampires faced in more primitive times. This story is set in 1899, right at the turn of the century, when automobiles were strange contraptions, and formal social conventions were still in force. Although this story didn't grab me by the throat, I thought it had several unique elements that kept my attention throughout.
Prudence's fight with cancer was a touching and credible plot device, but I was hoping to see even more emotion from her. I wanted to see the full spectrum, or the five stages of grief denial, anger, bargaining, depression, and acceptance. Pru goes through a few of these stages, but if our heroine is on her proverbial deathbed, I want to see all the stops. I felt like Pru went from anger to acceptance without much in between.
Chapel hates being a vampire, and he's convinced he's going to hell. It's a good thing he's got a killer bod, because his self-loathing doesn't give him points for his personality. Meanwhile Chapel's padre and Prudence both try to convince Chapel that he has a higher purpose, and God has not abandoned him for turning into a vampire. Chapel's conflict of conscience was no light thing, but after a while I was thinking, Oh bite her already, you know you're going to change her into a vamp. Yes, I got a bit impatient with the last third of the book, but it was a decent story. It looks like each book in this series follows a different couple, so I might skip around and try a few more.
Which, for me, is a shame. I liked many of her previous historicals and bought this one on the strength of her name and that past experience alone (I wasn't too atracted to the story line, but thought I'd give it a try). Lesson learned just because you like one type of book by an author doesn't mean that you'll like a completely different line.
